Long Beach Water Department Mural

This mural project was a collaboration with fellow Long Beach based artist Ramon Rodriguez. We were commissioned by the Long Beach Water Department to create three mobile murals to be presented at the 8th Annual Lawn to Garden Tour. The mural panels depict a vision of the past, present, and future of water conservation. Ramon and I collaborated on the design and color harmony in the three panels. Each of us designed individual panels with Ramon painting the “past” panel, while I painted the present day setting. The third panel was designed to incorporate community participation during the Lawn to Garden Tour. Special thank you to the Arts Council for Long Beach and their staff for coordinating and help develop this this project.

All three panels were setup and displayed for the Lawn to Garden Tour. The panel representing the future was setup so community members could fill blank spaces with color during the day.

Panel Building Process

The panels were designed and built to suit several purposes. Each of the panels had to be light weight, portable, and durable. My design also took in another consideration, budget and a quick timeline. Each panel section was made up by two smaller 4’x 8’ cradled panels which came together at the center. They had to be able to stand vertically while withstanding any rocking and potential toppling. The braces at the sides help stabilize the panels and with the help of sandbags and or cinderblocks provided a stable setup. You can view a gallery of the build below.
