Mural
This mural promotes safer sex practices and the use of PrEP and PEP within BIPOC LGBTQ+ communities. Inspired by how medication moves through the body, the design parallels the progression of relationships.
Absorption is depicted through soft, blended colors symbolizing PrEP entering the body. Medication distribution transforms into text message bubbles between two consenting adults, representing both PrEP awareness and the early stages of courtship.
Metabolism is illustrated through two profiles conversing within the silhouette of roses, which weave throughout the design to symbolize affection and growth. The color scheme honors the Pride flag, blending into the figures’ interaction.
By visually linking the ADME process to relationship-building, this mural highlights the excitement of meeting someone, the exchange of messages, and the deepening of connection over time. It also pays tribute to ACT UP and the ongoing fight to end HIV, fostering awareness through an engaging and culturally resonant lens.
Funding provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Ending the HIV Epidemic Grant and the County of Los Angeles, Department of Public Health, Division of HIV and STD Programs.
Community Mural Paint Day
The mural paint day brings together community members to participate in painting the mural.
A successful paint day requires detailed planning to ensure a smooth process where everyone can take part. Accessibility is key, making the event inclusive for people of all ages and abilities.
The mural is designed as a large paint-by-number project. Paint is pre-mixed and color-matched before the event, and the mural is outlined with bold lines. Each paint container is labeled with a number corresponding to a specific section on the wall.
As the facilitator, my role is to guide participants, demonstrate proper brush techniques, and ensure paint care. This approach allows for a visually striking and intricate design while remaining accessible to both children and adults, regardless of skill level.
As the mural progresses, experienced artist assistants and I refine details to enhance the final artwork.
